The older brother of the sport of freerunning, called parkour, originated in France around 1980. In parkour, the aim is to overcome the obstacles as smoothly and quickly as possible, while freerunning is also about the tricks and gracefulness. The sport stems from an escape technique from the Vietnam War. Soldiers practiced on the street to be able to move quickly from A to B. Later this was taken over by young people who took up the sport for pleasure. They took to the streets to complete a course as quickly as possible. Eventually somersaults and tricks were added and then the sport Freerunning was born. The first freerunners trained themselves, because there were of course no freerunning classes at that time.
Nowadays, the sport has become so big that you can take freerunning classes almost anywhere in the country. Here you will get started with the basics of freerunning. You learn how to jump in a controlled way, how to do a somersault and you learn more about the freerun mentality. Because in addition to learning the tricks themselves, there are also a number of unwritten rules within the sport that are important to know. As a freerunner, you are never reckless, you take good care of yourself and others and help each other where necessary.
Freerunning classes are often held in a gymnasium. This is the ideal location to safely practice your first tricks and jumps, because you can use mats that absorb your landing. In addition, freerun classes promote your creativity. Because you have a lot of materials in a gym, there are a lot of possibilities and you are constantly challenged to try new creative movements. Another advantage is that with a freerun class you can easily make new friends who have the same interests as you!
